acai

Health Benefits

Say hello to the acai berry and never look back! This little grape-like fruit packs a powerful punch full of vitamins, antioxidants, amino acids and essential fatty acids. This is why it is known as a superfood, or one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world.

The pulp of the berry has antioxidants that help fight premature aging. It actually has 10 times as many anti-oxidants as red grapes. It contains healthy fats, fiber and phytosterols to help with cardiovascular and digestive health. Last but not least, this berry has oleic acid which helps in the absorption of omega-3 oils. Those oils keep cell membranes supple, is anti-inflammatory, and therefore is anti-aging.

Description

Acai berries are in the same family as other small, dark fruits, such as cranberries blueberries. The grow on palm trees in Central and South America. The taste is alive and strong, somewhat like a blend of berries rather than just one.

Precautions

If you are allergic to other small fruits, such as blueberries, cranberries or raspberries, you may also be allergic to acai berries.

How to Brew and Drink

Go to a health food store to find your berries. They are your best bet, and probably have a selection of fresh, frozen or dried. I am particular to the fresh or frozen. Store the fresh ones in the fridge.

To brew, put a handful of crushed or chopped berries and fresh water into a pot. Bring water to a boil and the shut off the heat. Steep for about 5 minutes or a little longer if you desire. You can also leave the berries in the tea as you drink, or strain the tea.

This tea is very flavorful on its own and many choose not to add anything else. I have tried a tiny bit of milk which I like because it calms the flavor just enough for me. But it is at your discretion!

Take a look at the flavors we have compiled and see if there is something you might like to try in your acai tea.

Other Uses

The beauty industry loves the acai berry. Its anti-aging components make it a sought after ingredient in lotions and face masks. In fact, you can make your own face mask by combining some of this fruit's juice with water, natural clay and some drops of lemon juice. Make it a thick and moist consistency and then apply it to your face and neck, avoiding the eyes. Wash it off after 15 minutes and your skin will feel and look great.
